where to go

where to go

‎"Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life." Don't be trapped by dogma — which is living with the results of other people's thinking. Don't let the noise of others' opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.

-- Steve Jobs, address at Stanford University (2005)

the good life

the good life
the good life
the good life

no time to wander around with the camera at the moment, feeling very rushed and restless, so it's back to the archives. this is my mum, back in the early 1960s, enjoying some time off (which was rare enough). makes me want to go to the sea, or for a good hike. she does look happy on the first one, no?

p.s.: love seeing so many of you over on pininterest. yay! let me know if you need an invite to join, i still have a couple.

on finding inspiration III

light and darkness
light and darkness

sometimes all it takes, is taking a camera to your friends' party. they had a new year's toast the other day, which was so nice.

i like how much drama there is in light and darkness. these were taken with my nikkormat EL, some kodak b/w (400 asa) and my favourite 50mm/1.4f lens.

how's your week going?
i'm still frantically busy.

thinking of everyone in australia. this freak weather is so scary.

saturday

winter days at home
winter days at home

i think i'm cherishing my saturday mornings more than ever. having a little while to sit down, to think and write and maybe read a little before the day catches up with me. and to have a sitting-down breakfast for once. today's was:

coffee and a simple bircher muesli
coarsely grate an apple into a bowl, add some oats and a little boiling water. sprinkle with a little brown sugar and stir well. add a little liquid cream and some cinnamon, stir again. if you like, add some toasted nuts on top. done in less than five minutes.

also enjoyed this morning:
kate's windows down mix
the trailer for documentary film food stamped - is it possible to eat healthy on a food stamp diet?
(take a look, these guys are at sundance at the moment and hoping to get a distribution deal. if you do that kind of thing, you might consider following them on facebook (via their website), which could help them get the film into theatres. oh, and spread the word!)

happy weekend!

paper flower
paper flower

be patient.
(this might be the hardest part.)

p.s.: my friend eva made these paper flowers for me. they are real drama queens and yet quite subtle with that white silk paper.

leave your familiar routes and take an unknown sidestreet.
you may find a branch of blossoms.

just thinking

prater, berlin
prater, berlin
prater, berlin
prater, berlin

there are so many things to say about inspiration (or the lack thereof) - thank you so much for your comments!

the other day, jude sent me a note about searching for inspiration, or rather the wish to lure it back:

"i've been thinking about this and decided that sometimes it is okay to be fallow. just like in a garden, being fallow allows for some rejuvenation and so when the next inspirational moment happens it falls on rich ground. being still and fallow also allows for the deep part of the brain to work on things."

perhaps i'm just not very good at allowing for this and should give it a try? that being said, i've been impatient again and, wanting to shoot, have taken mary's advice to work with another kind of film in a camera i haven't used in a while. we'll see.

(the above photos were taken in early december, i only got the roll back now. do you see that little ring of light appearing on the scans i had made at the lab? i'm trying to find out what caused it. i hope it's only a smudge on the scanner's glass plate.)

sunday inspiration

1. Untitled, 2. Untitled, 3. from, 4. Untitled, 5. Untitled, 6. ., 7. marina & her birds, 8. tarte au citron, 9. FIAT 500

has it really been that long that i've done an inspiration post? it feels a bit like the last few weeks have flown by with lots of work and things that kept my mind occupied, and there wasn't really enough time to look for inspiration and really let it sink in. so now, i feel a bit stuck. i'm hoping things will calm down a little, or at least that i'm finding some mind space to let myself take in things. whenever i don't do that for any length of time, the well will run dry. do you know that feeling?

anyway, here are some inspirational images from a couple of very gifted photographers on flickr. do click on the link underneath the mosaic to find their photo streams and see more of their work. i think in these, the light speaks to me, as does the stillness of the nature and landscape scenes. oh, and there are rather a few blues in there as well, lightened by some golden hues, aren't there?

have a good week.

what are your plans for the weekend? i will have to work part of it, but am also planning a creative day with a friend: if all goes well, there will be some jam cooking with fresh figs, some chewy chocolate cookie baking, some sewing and some paper garland making. can't wait.

it's too hot really to write much. so i leave you with these favourites recently found on flickr - this time a somewhat pensive collection. i can't even say why. i'm finding these photos poetic and so strong.

as always with my "inspiration" posts, these are not my own photographs, but the work of amazing photographers sharing their vision on flickr. go and visit their photo streams by clicking on the respective caption underneath the mosaic.

have a wonderful weekend, full of sunshine and happiness.

believe it or not, today the sun was shining and i'm almost thinking spring was just pulling our leg yesterday with that miserable weather. but time for some flickr inspiration. i'm still loving portraits but find it rather hard to take them myself. we'll see what this year will bring in the long run. never say never and all that.

as always, the photos in these mosaics are pictures taken by flickr photographers, not by me. please click on the respective caption underneath the mosaic to take you to the photographer's photo stream on flickr. enjoy!

oh, and a question for you: what kind of pictures do you mostly take and which kind of pictures do you wish you were taking more of?

inspiration tuesday

1. everyone needs a rock, 2. typical, 3. Untitled, 4. one of my favourites, 5. little forest, 6. finland, 7. george jetson., 8. food set, 9. Chair

this is the first time i'm uploading some flickr favourites, thanks - yet again - to some technical help from kristina at greenwiggle. the first time i saw these mosaics on other blogs i loved them but had no clue what they were about. don't get me wrong, i'm always assuming you are much cleverer than i am, but in case you don't know what flickr favourites are either, here goes: flickr gives you the option to make images you find on their platform a "favourite". after a little while of browsing you are bound to end up with quite a selection of favourites, little mosaics of images you find inspiring. interesting to see then, how sometimes a certain colour seems to be creeping in over and over again. or that there are times when you seem to be inexplicable drawn to, say, photos with trees, or feet, or moody lighting. it may have to do with the subject matter of those images, their composition or palette, but it may equally have to do with your mood, the seasons, and the ways we see and we photograph that constantly evolve.

flickr favourites are also a great way to share inspiration and to explore what's out there. take your time and visit the photos that speak to you (using the links above), it will be worth it. maybe you'll even end up exploring yourself. go on, you know you want to...

thanks to all those flickr friends whose images constantly inspire me. and happy tuesday to all of you!
