seven things

i was tagged by natsumi and shortly after also by temps perdu to reveal seven things about myself. i kind of wondered if there's anything to reveal about myself - that notion seems to imply that i'm in any way mysterious and i don't think i am. i'll try anyway.

1. cutting up apples brings back childhood memories. many an evening after my younger brothers and sisters had gone to bed, my mum used to sit in the kitchen and peel and cut apples in quarters, than eights. and always shared them with me.

2. i wish i was somewhere warm right now. driving a convertible down a coastal road in the south of france with boyfriend would do nicely. i'd wear a headscarf and big sunglasses. of course.

3. i haven't had a really good read in a long time. and i love losing myself in a book.

4. i have a three-legged black cat named riga. we met on the internet, so to speak. she was listed by the local pet rescue place as "child of sorrow". she won't ever cuddle up to you and is very mistrustful. it took me four years to let me give her a proper tickle. i don't want to know what caused her to be like that.

5. i used to speak french fluently. now i speak a leeeetle bit, after half a bottle of wine, that is.

6. i wanted to have red hair and freckles when i was six. i still kind of do.

7. i do most things in life five to ten years later than anybody else.

seven loves and five obsessions

teaching the best part of these past two weeks feels like i've been sucked into some mysterious black hole. i'm slowly re-appearing. i had to cover for a colleague and, alongside my translation work, was teaching english for beginners at a college to students aged 16 to 28, eight hours straight each day. i was so knackered. but then i had lots of stories to tell at the end of each day. to all of you full-time, professional teachers out there: i admire you. so much.

today we are celebrating the first of advent, i lit the first candle this morning - such a beautiful time of year. this time, i don't have a advent wreath, but a simple candle arrangement with some silver baubles. will have to tweak it a bit though, it's not quite what i want yet.

while i'm re-appearing here, i might as well respond to those two tags passed on to me by blogging friends in denmark, sweden and france.

photography - i can't really put this into words, but you know, right?

food - as in strolling across farmers markets, cooking with or for friends, enjoying meals around a big table with lots of talk and laughter

books - reading them, looking at them, holding them, smelling ink on paper, this definitely is a sensual thing

chocolate - what can i say

art - it just makes me very happy. life would be empty without it. how wonderful that humans have this inbuilt capacity for creativity. i refuse to believe there are people who are unable to create

seven loves

my loved ones - without you i would only see a fraction of life's beautiful mosaic. i'm grateful for your different perspectives on life and for your willingness to be there for me

beauty - do you know that feeling when you see or hear something that touches you with its beauty, quite unexpectedly? my photo of that fragile bare branch was taken in our courtyard amidst rubbish bins, bikes and tricycles

london - the city, the friends - love you tons!

berlin - i hated you at first, but now i love you all the more 

cafés - taking a break, just sitting there with a coffee and being happy doing nothing

johann sebastian bach - i love all kinds of music, but his has stayed with me since childhood and moves me beyond words

me-time - moments to stop and think, to step out of the routine, preferably somewhere quiet with some books and my diary

i've been tagged by cabrizette, friend and fabulous blogger from marseille - go and take a look at her blog! - to post the tenth picture from my first album. i had no idea what i would find, eh voilà! a photo i took nearly two years ago, showing the wallpaper in my favourite café. can you make out the pattern (the photo is very dark, i hate using flash...)? it's little birds arranged into geometric formations, really rather unusual and pretty. the wallpaper is eggshell white and three-dimensional, the birds are embossed. the white stripe you see is indirect lighting they have fitted behind their leather benches. i could spend hours there (i actually do, come to think of it).

since i took this photo, the interior has changed a tad. it's comfortably worn in and slightly battered in places, but i like it just the same. plus, they know i like my espresso macchiato when i come round in the afternoon or a glass of sekt (sparkling wine) in the evening. shall i tell you where to find it?
