corner view: beach

hmm. berlin is not on the coast. so where do i find a beach for you?

then again, if you took a map, you'd see that the city is dotted with and surrounded by hundreds of lakes, some bigger, some smaller. many of them can be reached by public transport and/or bike, which is just fabulous. it may take a while to find a place where you can actually access the water, since there tends to be much reed and some people have their houses built directly on the lake, so some of the lakeside is private property. but keep looking and you'll find small beaches, some of them tiny, where you can have your picnic and even go for a swim. i've still got plenty of lakes to discover, which i can't wait for. so far, my favourites are wannsee (which is huge) - where i love to take the ferry (some pictures about wannsee and the ferry over at my other blog, mostly berlin) - and sacrower see, a very small lake not far from potsdam. this is where i took my pictures. what a lovely day that was.

have a good one yourselves!

take a look at other corner views around the world here:

p. s. : there are some beach bars in berlin as well. i haven't been in a while, but jeanne at sans soucis recently posted some pictures of a 'strandbar' in potsdam and you can also see some here.

picnic on the beach, is the most wonderful thing ! Even if it's a lake ! We didn't have the time to go and see the lakes during our trip in Berlin... an other time ! Bonne journée ! Bise.

wonderful photos, so beautiful colors! may i ask what kind of camera you use, or is it about the film?

i went swimming to the olympic stadium in Berlin, and also once to kind of a strandbar/pool. i was the only one really swimming there, i guess it was more for sunbathing;)

@ cabrizette: yes, i really like picnics, too. and i'm sure you'll find time to visit one of the lakes next time you're here - they are really to get to by s-bahn!

@ kasia and jane: thank you - have good day, too!

@ outi: thank you... i'm using two cameras: a very small digital one that isn't very good (which is part of the appeal) and an analogue vintage SLR, a praktica (an east german make). these pictures were taken with the analogue camera on 200 asa print film, a no-name-brand from a local drugstore. i do like that camera a lot.

when you went swimming, maybe it wasn't really hot outside? berliners are a bit reluctant to swim unless it really warm and sunny... :)

Such relaxing places... I really can't wait to go to Berlin! I want to go before the end of the year. It's interesting to see what those who don't live in the coast have done with this topic.

HI Kristina, Your pics are great! I love picnics. On Sunday my husband and I packed a light dinner to have at our forest preserves.

I wish our private beach was for our use only. LOL... The 3 private beaches around our lake are for certain homes to belong to if they want and pay an association fee. Because of some old grandfather by-laws some homes no matter what can not join because of where their land is- weird to be, but they can't change the by-laws. We are one of the lucky ones having our home built on land that adds value to it by being part of the beach. Some on my friends actually have homes on the lake. We just have to walk a couple steps.
Thanks! Hugs... xoxo

wow, thanks for all your sweet comments - they are all really appreciated and make me very happy, so thanks again!

@ fine little day: yes, we do, occasionally... ;-) although i have my doubts at the moment - it's cold and rainy outside, it's wooly scarf and hat and the summer coat's not warm enough. booh.

@ ida: yes, it is a rather funny name - always makes me think of 'badewanne' (bathtub). which may not be coincidental, come to think of it...

@ daan: i know exactly what you mean - we have a very similar saying: sand reinigt den magen (sand cleans the stomach). and as you tend to eat a bit of sand when having a picnic at a beach that may be just as well :)

@ b: yes, do come, it's a good place :)

@ isabelle: thank you so much! will look into it as soon as i get a chance and may be in touch by email to bombard you with questions ... ;-)

@ jeannette: dankeschön! und das ist ein gefährliches angebot - könnte sein, dass ich tatsächlich mal vorbeischaue... ;-)

@ malo: swedish, really? that's cool - you got me really chuffed now!

@ outi: the berliners are such sissies, what's wrong with going for a swim when it's not tropical?! you are setting an example for all of us, hooray to you! :-)

@ joyce: that's really interesting! good that the laws are in your favour then! :-)

I actually prefer the lake to the beach. Where I grew up we lived near a lake. A few summers ago when we were home we went out on the boat with my aunt and uncle... it may sound a little funny, but it smelled so good like a mixture of the trees and the fresh water. I can still remember how it smells.
